Collaborating with Columbia College and Studio Gang Architects on this Media Production Center resulted in a landscape design that complements the dynamic facade of the building. At the south end of the building, specimen trees provide much needed shade while also providing colorful foliage and bark displays in all four seasons. The evergreen shrubs are arranged to simulate the pixilation of digital media. On the two extensive green roofs, the thoughtful planting design of striking foliage and colorful flowers takes its inspiration from a color bar test pattern common in the film industry.

FEDEX CARGO RELOCATION

This LEED certified project includes a new cargo facility for FedEx including a sort building, an administrative building, a vehicle maintenance building and associated parking. All landscape areas were designed to meet the sustainable guidelines of the O’Hare Modernization Program while not compromising Airport security and aircraft safety. Design elements include open green space areas, parking islands and buffer zones, architectural hardscape including pedestrian permeable paver areas and vegetated roofs. Special coordination of the green roof specification was crucial. Sitting on only 4” of soil, the pre-vegetated sedum mat green roof is one of the largest freestanding green roofs in the country.

MILWAUKEE AVENUE STREETSCAPE - 6 CORNERS

The Streetscape Department of CDOT is a forward thinking agency that sets forth a combination of streetscape standards with unique neighborhood identifiers. First and foremost is the addition of new street trees to form a continuous street wall. Specialty items are added on as budget allows. Fortunately, there was a larger budget for the 6 Corners Streetscape and custom identifier elements such as an entry gateway, a kiosk, lightpole banners and precast planters were integrated into the project. The selected plant material met the criteria of CDOT in terms of design aesthetic and durability. The end product is a sustainable yet lively pedestrian environment.
