ALTGELD GARDENS

The Altgeld Gardens Community is a large scale multi-family public housing development located near the City of Chicago’s southern boundary in the Lake Calumet region. This project includes a comprehensive, multi-phase renovation of the buildings and the site based on a master plan concept developed in conjunction with the CHA and the Architect. A prototype design was developed to define the front and back yards in a distinct manner to provide a sense of place. The front yard circulation system follows a more angular design while the backyard paths are more curvilinear and free flowing. Site improvements include paved paths and plazas, lighting, fencing, seating, landscape, and playgrounds. Native plantings are used whenever possible in an effort to adhere to the sustainable design guidelines of the Lake Calumet Region.

HOPE VI DUNELANDS VILLAGE

Hope VI Dunelands Village is a model project for sustainable stormwater management.  All the stormwater onsite is funneled to 3 rain gardens throughout the five blocks of the multi-family residences.  Given the high permeability of the existing sandy soil, the storm sewer system was designed to work as an exfiltration system with the rain gardens storing the overflow water.  The rain gardens are heavily planted with all native plants that thrive in wet or dry soil conditions.  Ultimately, any non-infiltrated water will outfall to a center midway without being collected into the city sewer system.

OAKWOOD SHORES

This mixed income residential development on Chicago’s South Side provides welcome new housing stock as part of a larger master plan. A variety of building types prevent the development from appearing too cookie-cutter and the landscape design reinforces the unique identity of each block through the deliberate placement of tree species. A combination of parkway trees, shade and ornamental trees, shrubs, perennials, and sod provide a lush, yet maintainable outdoor environment. All landscape areas were designed to meet the requirements of the City of Chicago Landscape Ordinance including parking lot screening, fencing and parkway trees.
